San Luis Obispo High's Will Ernst finished with the 11th-best time in the preliminary heats of the boys 1,600-meter run, and Morro Bay's Sierra Emrick was one of eight girls pole vaulters to clear 12 feet, 2 inches Friday at the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High in Clovis to qualify for Saturday's final in their events.
Atascadero's Sarah Stafford finished 14th in the girls shot put with a best of 40-10 1/4. The top 12 finishers in each preliminary event qualified for the finals.
Morro Bay's Austin Lay will be running in the boys 3,200 final Saturday as there were no qualifying heats in that race.
Emerick cleared 11-2 and 11-8 on her first attempts and 12-2 in her second attempt. Her personal record of 12-7 was set in winning the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 title last month.

Ernst finished in 4 minutes, 15.97 seconds in his qualifying heat. He was the fifth-fastest in his heat and 11th-best overall with the top 12 moving into Saturday's final.
