The Mission Prep football team got a small measure of revenge for losing last season’s CIF-Southern Section Northeast Division championship game by beating Rio Hondo Prep 24-21 Friday night.
The Royals (1-1) have seen plenty of the Kares the past two seasons. After defeating Rio Hondo Prep in the 2012 regular season, Mission Prep was upset in the championship game, 28-21.
Mission Prep jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the second quarter behind three touchdown passes from Patrick Miller and barely held off the Rio Hondo Prep (1-1) comeback.
Miller completed 7 of 14 passes for 89 yards and an interception. Evan Talbert had two touchdown receptions and finished with three catches for 34 yards. Patrick Laird had 41 rushing attempts for 229 yards.
Johnny Boliger led Rio Hondo Prep with three touchdown passes on 13-of-27 passing for 206 yards and one interception. Boliger’s 58-yard score in the fourth quarter brought the visiting Kares to within one score, but Rio Hondo Prep ran out of time.
Mission Prep outgained Rio Hondo Prep 311-221. The Royals’ run defense held the Kares to 24 yards on 19 carries, with 15 yards coming on Nate Tayco’s touchdown in the third quarter.
