Arroyo Grande High standout Zach Stevens concluded his trip to the U.S. national swimmming championships with a 22nd-place finish in the 100 breaststroke Friday in Indianapolis.
Stevens swam a personal-best 1 minutes, 4.02 seconds. He also had top-25 finishes in two other events at the championships in recent days.
“He was right on his best times,” Eagles boys swimming coach Russell Peterson said, “which is pretty good for not being fully rested for this meet.”
Peterson said Stevens trained almost all the way up to the start of the meet and is peaking for the national junior meet, which is being held in early August.
Entering his senior year, Stevens may also be contacted directly by college coaches beginning this summer.
“Really, this was to gain experience competing at the national level,” Peterson said. “He’s started to go through the recruiting prosccess. It gives him more exposure to the high-level college coaches at that meet.”
