The Arroyo Grande High boys water polo team stumbled out of the gate Wednesday, falling behind 4-1 after the first quarter in a 12-7 loss to Malibu.
Jack Empey had two goals, and five other Eagles scored once in the nonleague loss.
Clint Doucette had eight saves in goal for Arroyo Grande (7-3).
Morro Bay boys water polo downs Lompoc

The Morro Bay High boys water polo team was dominant in a 26-6 over Lompoc in the Los Padres League opener for both teams.
Cole Bedaksic had five goals, Alexander McKee and Grant Johnson had four each, and the Pirates (8-6), who were up 10-1 after the first quarter, scored all 26 goals in the first three quarters of the game.
Jack Krull had 12 saves in goal for Morro Bay.
Nipomo girls golf team downs Santa Ynez
The Nipomo High girls golf team defeated Santa Ynez 252-313 in a Los Padres League dual match on the front nine at Monarch Dunes Golf Club.
Courtney Cuzick shot a 9-over 45 to medal for the Titans (3-0 LPL). Ashley Ruiz shot a 48, and Christine DeLaby shot a 50 for Nipomo.
Templeton sweeps cross country meets
The Templeton High cross country team swept the boys and girls 5K races at Mission Prep, with the Eagle girls taking the top five individual places.
Veronica Russell won in 19 minutes 39 seconds for the Eagles, followed by Dana Alpert (20:21), Ann Taylor (20:46), Kecymar Osuma (20:50) and Gwen Pipes (21:57).
Templeton had 15 points, Orcutt Academy was second with 54 and the Royals had 70.
Karina Torres was 11th (23:32), and Jillian Ronay was 18th (24:08) for Mission Prep.
For the boys, Templeton won with 34 points, followed by the Spartans (42) and the Royals (58).
Orcutt Academy’s Nicholas Murillo was first in 17:37, followed by Mission Prep’s Jack Mooney (17:54).
Jose Palacios was fourth for the Eagles (18:16), Chris Wallace was sixth (18:29), Jacob Gray was seventh (18:30) and Henry Schmidt was eighth (18:32).
Bailey Hungerford was fifth (18:26) for the Royals.
