Brent VanderVeen scored 19 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and dished out six assists as the Arroyo Grande High boys basketball team defeated Channel Islands 56-47 on Friday in the Carpinteria Tournament.
Gunnar Gomez led the Eagles (3-4) with 24 points, knocking down five 3 pointers. Cobe Williams scored 11, with three 3-pointers.
VanderVeen, Gomez and Williams combined for 54 of their team’s 56 points.
The Eagles led 27-26 at halftime and went on to outscore Channel Islands 16-12 in the third en route to the win.

Also in the Carpinteria Tournament, Morro Bay outscored Newbury Park 18-3 at the free-throw line to fend off the Panthers 56-53.
Luke Munds led the Pirates (7-5) with 25 points, and both Marcus Zorovich and Bryce Owens scored 10.
Scott Milligan had 11 rebounds.
MISSION PREP CHRISTMAS CLASSIC
San Joaquin Memorial 49, Mission Prep 38
The Royals (7-1) fell to San Joaquin in the Mission Prep Christmas Classic.
Connor Woolpert led Mission Prep with 13 points.
North County Christian 50, Coastal Christian 41
The Crusaders (1-1 CVL, 2-7) defeated the Conquerors (1-1 CVL, 1-4).
Daniel Katches led North County Christian with 21 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals. John Katches contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Crusaders, who had 14 blocked shots.
Anthony Aquilar had 16 points and six steals for Coastal Christian, and Curtis Henry added 12 points.
Farmersville Aztecs Invitational
In its first game of the tournament, San Luis Obispo (5-5) defeated Orosi 28-14.
Erica Chandler had 15 points, and Jessica Judge had eight for San Luis Obispo.
In game two, the Tigers cruised past Tranquility 44-4. San Luis Obispo led 27-0 at halftime.
Chandler again led the Tigers with 12 points.
San Luis Obispo takes the court again today at 1 p.m. against host Farmersville to wrap up pool play. The Tigers will then play another game after all teams have been seeded into brackets.
North County Christian 46, Coastal Christian 26
Mandy Legault and Melat Zippy led the Crusaders (2-0, 2-0 CVL) with 10 points each in the win.
Legault also had nine steals, and Zippy had a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Amy Arnold had a game-high 16 rebounds, and Bethany Young contributed five steals for Coastal Christian (1-2, 1-1 CVL).
Atascadero (6-0) outlasted Madera in overtime, winning 2-1.
Rhiannon Dudley scored late in the second quarter off an assist from Hannah McMillan, and then Maia Mumford scored a goal in overtime for the win.
Morro Bay (0-7-1) fell to Edison of Fresno 2-0, despite nine saves and a first-half shutout from goalie Hanna Meisenger.
San Luis Obispo (5-1-2) defeated Clovis North 2-0.
Travis Caldwell scored the Tigers’ first goal off an assist by Paul Sullivan, who later assisted on Matthew Connely’s goal.
San Luis Obispo’s goalies, Baleric Bernudez and Michael Landerc, shared the shutout.
Victor Casas scored three goals to push Coast Union past Sierra 3-1.
Casas scored two in the first half and one in the second, while Juan Leonardo had five saves in goal for Coast Union (3-0-1).
Arroyo Grande 2, San Marcos 0
The Eagles used two first-half goals to defeat San Marcos.
Raul Munoz scored for the Eagles (5-4-2) off an assist from James Lang, and Angel Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick.
Alex Montero had five saves for Arroyo Grande.
