The Paso Robles High softball team defeated El Segundo 5-1 in the wild-card round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs Wednesday behind the arm of sophomore pitcher Jenna Wookey.
Wookey gave up one run, a solo homer in the top of the second inning, on three hits with five strikeouts in the complete-game win for the Bearcats.
Paso Robles (18-11) advanced to the first round, where it will play at Peninsula of Palisades at 3:15 this afternoon.
Wookey also hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning, putting the Bearcats up 3-1 and giving them the lead for good.
“We played solid defense and made some plays,” Paso Robles coach Val Reynolds said. “It was a good win for us.”
Six different batters combined for the Bearcats’ six hits in the game, including three doubles.
Alemany 7, San Luis Obispo 4
Louie Summer was 2 for 3 with one RBI and a run scored, and Davis Casciola was 3 for 4 with a run scored, but the Tigers (14-14) were eliminated from the Division 2 playoffs in the wild-card round.
San Luis Obispo starter Sean Mullen gave up five unearned runs in the first three innings thanks to three errors.
“Mullen pitched well,” Tigers coach Bobby Ryan said. “It was a good effort by all the kids, but we couldn’t execute, made early errors and couldn’t overcome.”
Coast Union 6, Trinity Classical Academy 2
Tommy Howard connected on a go-ahead, two-run double in the fourth, sparking a five-run inning that secured the win for the Broncos (8-12) and pushed them into the first round of the Division 7 playoffs.
Omar Catalan also had an RBI double in the inning. Alex Wolf was 2 for 3 for Coast Union.
Garrett LeMilliere gave up two runs on three hits, four walks, and five strikeouts in the complete-game win.
The Broncos will play at Pacifica Christian in Venice at 3:15 p.m. Friday in the first round.
