The Atascadero High girls water polo team earned a win in the wild-card round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoffs Tuesday, edging Hueneme 8-7.
The Greyhounds were in control for the majority of the game, taking a 5-3 lead into halftime.
Atascadero was up 8-3 early in the fourth period when Hueneme sped up the pace of its game, pushing the ball in transition and chasing after everything, including goalie Erin Morey.
Hueneme scored three goals in the final 2:30 to pull within 8-7 and a shot to tie it in the closing seconds, but the shot bounced off the top bar, and Atascadero cleared the ball to seal the victory.
Never miss a local story.
