Arroyo Grande High was able to maintain the early lead it built to take Friday’s football season opener for both teams with a 13-7 win over nonleague foe Lompoc.
Seth Jacobs started the scoring for the Eagles on a 25-yard run in the first quarter. Ciaran Costa would later score in the second quarter on a 12-yard jaunt.
The only score for Lompoc came in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard Marcel Blow run.
Both teams provided a heavy dose of running with Arroyo Grande gaining 244 yards on 38 carries to Lompoc’s 207 yards on 53 carries.
Costa was the standout for the Eagles on the ground with 102 yards and 10 carries. Jacobs added 60 yards on 10 carries, and Christian Crichton also had 60 yards on 13 carries.
Lompoc’s Blow ran for 140 yards on 28 carries.
Central 54, Paso Robles 25
In Fresno, Paso Robles struggled to stop the ground game in the second half in the season opener for both teams.
The Bearcats (5-5 in 2009) made the game close with two scores book-ended over halftime before the Grizzlies pulled away.
After falling behind Central 14-0, Paso Robles scored with just under two minutes to play in the first half and again on their first drive of the second half to pull within 14-12.
Then, the Central (7-4 in 2009) running game exerted its dominance. Mike Grimes ran for four touchdowns in the second half alone, and the Grizzlies defense stifled any Bearcats’ answer until too late.
Paso Robles defeated Central 55-42 last year.
