The Morro Bay High softball team has turned its season around at just the right time.
Limping into the bulk of Los Padres League play with a 6-13 record, the Pirates have since reeled off five straight wins to jump into second place in league play.
Morro Bay has gotten back into the playoff race largely because of their pitching and defense, according to coach Arnie Silacci.
Thursday was no different as Candace Milbourne pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Pirates (11-13, 6-2) to a 2-0 win over Santa Ynez.
Never miss a local story.
Milbourne has allowed just one earned run during the Morro Bay winning streak.
“(Candace) has kept us in every game,” Silacci said. “We don’t score a lot of runs but we’ve played pretty well as a team defensively.”
Jasmine Singh had two of Morro Bay’s six hits, and Jordan Martinez added a hit with a run scored and an RBI.
The Pirates trail St. Joseph (18-6, 7-1) by one game. Morro Bay beat the Knights 1-0 on Tuesday, handing them their only league loss this season.
The teams will play again in Morro Bay’s season finale May 14.
Mission Prep 17, Coast Union 0, 5 innings
