The Arroyo Grande High boys water polo team lost its season opener against San Marcos 17-9 Thursday in Santa Barbara.
The Royals (1-0) jumped out to an 11-5 lead at halftime and outscored the visiting Eagles 6-4 in the second half.
Arroyo Grande’s Josh Smith, who scored 50 goals as a junior last season, picked up right where he left off by recording a team-high four goals during Thursday’s match. Jack Alexander scored three times, and Mikey Kullman scored twice for the Eagles (0-1). Senior goalkeeper Jared Swenson made seven saves.

Galen Penvenne had seven goals, and both Zander Rolth and Ian Quinn had four goals to lead the Tigers to the win in their season opener.
Quinn’s four goals all came in the third quarter on consecutive possessions. Ben Hurley added three more goals, and Andrew Maas had seven saves for San Luis Obispo.
Felippo Mairitzi had a pair of goals for the Pirates (0-2), and sophomore Levi Krull scored his first varsity goal.
Paso Robles 11, Cabrillo 6
Mitchell Iunker had four goals, and Wyatt Spencer and Garrett Wilson each added a pair in Paso Robles' season opener.
Iver Hansen notched 12 saves in goal for the Bearcats.
