In a battle of Central Coast heavyweights, it was Arroyo Grande High that defeated Lompoc on Friday night, 34-28 at Doug Hitchen Stadium.
Arroyo Grande quarterback Sawyer May was 16 of 19 passing for 197 yards and tossed a pair of touchdowns. May’s first touchdown pass came on the Eagles’ first play of the game, a play-action 75-yard pass to senior wide-receiver Jeremiah Wright. It was a play that May said the team had been working on all week in practice.
Lompoc scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but May picked up two scrambling first downs in the final minutes to hold on for the win.
Player of the Game: Senior Bradley Mickey did it all for the Eagles.
Never miss a local story.
At the end of the first half, Mickey tackled Lompoc star running back Toa Taua on a goal line stand as time expired in the second quarter to preserve the Eagles 21-7 halftime lead. In the second half, he took a handoff from May 81 yards to the house to put Arroyo Grande up 28-7. A short time later, he picked off Lompoc quarterback Torey Sims as the Braves were trying to mount a comeback.
Explosive Plays: Adding to Mickey’s 81-yard run, and May’s opening 75-yard pass to Wright was Matt Sill. Sill started with a jet sweep handoff that went 46 yards for the score with 2:38 left in the first quarter. Later, Sill caught a 31-yard dart from May and scored a touchdown that put the game out of reach.

The Eagles didn’t stop the five-star recruit from Lompoc, but they did enough. Taua had his share of big hits and highlight moments, notably a 48-yard touchdown on a screen pass for his second touchdown of the game, but Mickey’s tackle at the goal line kept Taua off the board in a crucial moment and gave the Eagles enough room in the first half to pull out the win. Taua finished the game with 70 yards rushing on 13 carries, 48 yards receiving and two second half touchdowns.
What’s Next: Arroyo Grande goes on the road next week to play Independence High in Bakersfield.
