Jerome Randle and Theo Robertson each scored 22 points, and 13th-ranked California pulled away in the second half for a 95-61 win over Detroit.
Patrick Christopher added 18 points for the Golden Bears (2-0), who were coming off a tight 75-70 victory over Murray State in the season opener on Monday.
The two games were part of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. The Golden Bears will meet Syracuse in the tournament's semifinals, slated for November 19 at Madison Square Garden.
After the game, California coach Mike Montgomery noted there was plenty of room for improvement.
"We've just got to get the killer instinct," he said. "We've got to be able to put the foot on the throat when we get a run going. I think we get a little bit relaxed."
Chase Simon scored 17 points to pace the Titans (0-1), who also received 15 points from Eli Holman and 14 from Thomas Kennedy. Detroit lost for the 15th straight time against a ranked opponent and hasn't won a road game against a ranked team since February 6, 1979, when the Titans stunned No. 8 Marquette.
"We came out of the locker room the second half and played with some confidence and got some things to go for us and cut the lead, I think to six," said Detroit coach Ray McCallum. "And that's what a good veteran team does. They got it together and made a run and didn't stop running. They were able to put us away and then exert their ability and size on the offensive glass. So, when they missed it, the last 12 minutes, they were able to put it back in."
Cal built its lead to 23-11 midway through the first half, but Detroit hung in and was within 40-32 at the break. Simon ended the half with a three-pointer, shortly after Kennedy jammed.
The Titans netted the first four points of the second half, but the Golden Bears pulled away thanks to an ensuing 8-0 spurt. Randle capped it off with a pair of free throws.
Detroit once again cut into the lead, as Xavier Keeling's layup had the visitors within 50-44 with 14:38 remaining. Cal then put away the Titans by scoring the next 11 points. Christopher and Robertson hit three-pointers to culminate the push.
The double-digit lead remained with Cal only making it a blowout in the final 10 minutes.
