Matt Imhof continued his torrid pace to start the season, striking out 14 batters in the Cal Poly baseball team’s 8-1 win over Wagner on Friday — the No. 11 Mustangs’ fifth straight win.
This is the third time this season that Imhof has struck out at least 14 on the mound for the Cal Poly. Imhof (4-1) went eight innings and gave up three hits.
At the plate, Brian Mundell and Mark Mathias both scored two runs and drove in two more.
John Schuknect hit Cal Poly’s second triple of the season, and five Mustangs — Jordan Ellis, Nick Torres, Jimmy Allen, Mark Mathias and Peter Van Gansen — had two hits. Cal Poly had 13 total hits.
Fresno State Classic
In its first game against Colorado State, Cal Poly lost 6-2 as Sierra Hyland gave up three runs in the fourth inning.
The Rams scored one in the first inning, but the Mustangs tied the score in the third on an RBI single from Jillian Anderson. Colorado State added two more runs on a bases-loaded hit batter and a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Cal Poly (13-11) had just two runners reach second base in a 5-0 loss to Ohio State. Emily Ceccacci had the only extra-base hit for the Mustangs, a double.
Cal Poly at NCAA Zone Championships
Mustang seniors Sami McIntyre and Meaghan O’Meara failed to qualify past the preliminaries of the 3-meter event in the Air Force Academy’s Cadet Natatorium in Colorado Springs.
They compiled six-dive scores of 215.95 and 158.10, respectively. USC’s 2008 U.S. Olympian Haley Ishimatsu finished first in the finals with a score of 661.55.
Western State Conference Invitational
Cuesta College All-American Georan Meendering won the men’s 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 56.67 seconds and finished first in the 100 backstroke in 53.33 as the Cougars won the five-team men’s conference meet in Bakersfield with 169 points.
Austin Bauer won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 47.19 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.36. Calvin Gonder won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:07.76.
Bakersfield was second with 121 points.
For the Cuesta women, Rachel Grutzmacher won the 50 freestyle in 24.67 and the 100 butterfly in 1:01.79. The Cougars finished second with 122 points, behind Bakersfield’s 130.
