Elise Krieghoff scored twice in Cal Poly’s 2-1 win at UC Santa Barbara on Friday night as the Mustangs extended their winning streak to five and clinched at least a share of the regular-season Big West Conference title.
Krieghoff, who entered the game tied for the nation’s scoring lead, scored her first goal in the 50th minute off an assist from Sara Lancaster. She then scored her 20th goal of the season three minutes later, taking advantage of defensive miscommunication.
Krieghoff took seven shots in the game, while the rest of the Cal Poly (10-7, 6-1) team had three shots combined.
Allie Ariniello cut the deficit to 2-1 for the Gauchos (9-8-1, 3-4) when she scored on a rebound in the 80th minute. Madison Beckley assisted on the goal. Beth Ritter had two saves for UC Santa Barbara.
Alyssa Giannetti had four saves in goal for the Mustangs, who were outshot 12-10.
Cal Poly 3,Cal State Fullerton 1
The Mustangs rallied to win 19-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-23 in Fullerton.
Megan McConnell led Cal Poly (9-11, 3-4 Big West) with 12 kills, three aces and six digs.
Maddie Kuber provided 40 assists, 10 digs and eight kills, while Anna Gorman had 15 kills and four digs.
Cal State Fullerton (9-10, 2-5) had a set point in the second set and led 23-21 in the fourth set before dropping both sets. Alyse Hensley led the Titans with a match-high 22 kills, and Julie Consani had 47 assists.
The Mustangs moved into a tie for fifth in the Big West after the win.
Cuesta 3, Moorpark 1
Riley Cooks had 12 kills for the Cougars, as they beat the Raiders 25-13, 11-25, 26-24, 25-23.
Cami Mauricio had 11 kills for Cuesta (11-6, 4-2 Western State Conference), and Whitney Meyer and Kylie DeCoster each had nine kills. Blake O’Brien led with 28 assists.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
Hawaii, UCSB at Cal Poly
On the first day of the two-day tri-meet, Cal Poly’s Mickey Mackle won the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 53.26 seconds, and Pablo Stanchi took fourth with a time of 1:54.96.
Sonny Fierro came in second in the 500 freestyle for the Mustangs in 4:34.98.
The Cal Poly women’s relay team of Alisha Bender, Rachel Cleak, Emma Henderson and Jill Jones finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.19.
Jones also placed second in the 50 free with a time of 24.55, and Taylor Guy finished fourth at 24.72.
Grace Greenwood was third for the Mustangs in diving, with a score of 254.65 on the women’s 1-meter board, and Elliott Adams also placed third with 277.60 on the men’s 3-meter.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
Cuesta at TruWest Tournament, at Long Beach
The Cougars beat Pasadena in their first game 18-4 and beat Saddleback 23-8.
Haley Shafer had a total of 13 goals on the day for Cuesta (19-7), and Paige Holt had six goals and three saves in the first game. Gabrielle Zimmerman had 21 saves total for the day.
Cuesta fundraiser for baseball planned
The Cuesta College baseball program is hosting its annual Christmas Tree Fundraiser.
All proceeds will be used for Cuesta baseball operating expenses. Pre-orders are being accepted through Nov. 6. Douglas Fir and Noble Fir Christmas trees ranging from 5 to 10 feet tall are available.
