Nine Cuesta College baseball players were named to the all-Western State Conference teams Tuesday, with Andrew Nelson being named the conference’s top pitcher and Bob Miller being named Coach of the Year.
Nelson went 10-4 this season, finishing third in the state in wins, and struck out 87 batters, good for second in California.
Miller led the Cougars (21-15) to their 14th conference title in 18 seasons and a No. 8 seed in the playoffs. Cuesta will host No. 9-seeded Cypress Friday at 1 p.m. and again Saturday at 1 p.m. in a best-of-three series.
Starting pitcher Lucas Martin, catcher Parker Hindle, shortstop Zack Domingues and leftfielder Spencer Ruggles, an Atascadero High graduate, joined Nelson on the first team.

Andrew Montanari, Marco Murillo (San Luis Obispo) and Scott Shields (San Luis Obispo) were named to the second team, and Nicolas Rosso received honorable mention recognition for the Cougars.
Masutani named MVP
Cuesta shortstop Kryn Masutani was named the WSC Player of the Year after a record-breaking sophomore season, one of eight Cougars’ to be named to the all-conference team.
Masutani set a school record and led the state with 66 RBI, and set a Cougar career record with 76. She also tied or set school records for doubles (22), home runs (13), stolen bases (31), batting average (.542), slugging percentage (1.053), and on-base percentage (.571).
Cougars first baseman Summer Best, an Atascadero High graduate, joined Masutani on the all-WSC first team, hitting .312 on the season with two home runs and 19 RBI.
Jasmine Singh (Morro Bay) and Mackenzie Brewster were both named second team, and Celine Blanco, Christina Corsaletti, Courtney Bragg, Kaitlyn Rinder and Laura Gorman (Atascadero) were honorable mention selections.
Cuesta’s Johnson to sign Letter of Intent
Aria Johnson, a sophomore forward for the Cougars, is expected to sign a letter of intent May 8 to play basketball at Merrimack College, a private institution in North Avendor, Mass., that competes at the Division II level.
Merrimack finished 17-12 a season ago and will return all but two players from last year’s team.
