Five Cuesta College track and field athletes on Friday advanced to the California Community College State Championships, which will be held this Friday and Saturday in Sacramento.
On the men’s side, the Cougars saw Austin Field, a former Arroyo Grande High standout, qualify in both the discus and shot put, while teammate Derick Hinch advanced in the pole vault.
Field threw 49 feet, 3 3⁄4 inches in the shot put to place second and 150-4 in the discus to place fourth. Hinch had a runner-up clearance of 16-6 3⁄4 in his event.
Among the women to move on this past weekend at the Southern California regionals were Arroyo Grande products Rachel Murphy and Grace Mann (both in the pole vault), while former Templeton star Kasey Urman will compete in the 1,500.

Murphy had a second-place regional clearance of 11-7, while Mann was sixth at 10-0 3⁄4. Urman’s seventh-place qualifying time was 4:49.08.
