San Luis Obispo High graduate Max Duval sparked Cuesta College’s 10-8 baseball win over Oxnard on Thursday with a two-out grand slam in the fifth inning.
Duval finished the game 3 for 5 with a double, a home run, five RBI and two runs scored for Cuesta (9-6).
Second baseman Alex Detz, a Mission Prep grad, had a double and was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.
Another San Luis Obispo High alumnus, John Tiedemann, who came in in relief, picked up his fourth win, throwing 22⁄3 innings while fanning four, only giving up one hit.
Cuesta athletes of the month
Duval and softball player Ashley Dooley have been named Cuesta’s athletes of the month for March.
Duval, a sophomore first baseman, hit .264 his freshman year and had improved that average to .388 so far this season entering Thursday’s game. He is slugging .673 and has an on-base percentage of .483 during the first 14 games this season.
Dooley, a freshman catcher from Atascadero High, is hitting .500 and slugging .794 for the Cougars (5-10).
On Feb. 11, she hit for the cycle and drove in four runs.
