In a battle of Cougars, Cuesta College’s women’s soccer team stifled Taft 2-1 to bring its early-season record back over .500 Tuesday in San Luis Obispo.
Cuesta (2-1) leapt out to an early lead in the 10th minute after Sarah Wheeler finished on a rebound off of a Rachael Warner shot. On the play, Gina Foster played the ball forward to the attacking Wheeler. The forward could not beat the goalie, but Warner was there to put the deflection away for her second goal of the season.
Warner was credited for her third assist in as many games.
Cuesta’s defense dominated the half, and needed only one save to keep the score at 1-0.
In the second half, Cherish Bonomi put away a penalty from a handball in the box to put Cuesta up 2-0. Minutes later, Taft (2-3-1) put themselves back in the game with a header inside the box.
