Javier Avila and Raleigh O’Brien have been named Cuesta College’s athletes of the month.
Avila, a freshman wrestler, finished fifth at the recent state meet at 157 pounds. One of seven Cougars competing at the state meet, Avila began the season at 165 pounds, moved up top 174 and down to 157 for the postseason. He was 20-16 overall. His fifth-place state finish was the highest of any Western State Conference wrestler and earned him the conference wrestler of the year award.
Avila is the sixth Cuesta wrestler to be named conference wrestler of the year since 1983.
The Cougars finished 12th at state after a third-place WSC finish.
O’Brien is the lone Cuesta women’s basketball player averaging in double figures and leads the team with 11.4 points per game. She has led the Cougars in scoring in seven of 13 games this season with a season-high of 22 points.
The Cougars are 3-10 entering tonight’s WSC opener against L.A. Pierce at home.
