LAS VEGAS — Former Cal Poly standout Ben Bruce of Flagstaff, Ariz., had little trouble pulling away from his closest competitors Sunday night to win the Las Vegas Marathon easily in a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, 22 seconds.
On a flat course that ran primarily along famed Las Vegas Boulevard, Bruce moved past Bartosz Olszewski of Poland at the 15-mile mark and was never in danger of losing his lead. He and Olszewski were virtually together through the first half of the race, running that distance in 1:12:51.
With rock bands performing live along the course and Elvis impersonators among the field of more than 5,000 runners, Bruce, 32, seemed to have no trouble winning his fifth marathon this year. He also was victorious at New Orleans, San Diego, St. Louis and Montreal.
