The Cal Poly women’s soccer team lost to Long Beach State 0-0 — 5-4 penalty kicks — in the semifinals of the Big West Conference Tournament at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Thursday night, likely ending its season.
The Mustangs outshot the 49ers 18-8 through 110 minutes of play, but could not convert with their five shots on goal.
Cal Poly’s all-time leading goal scorer, Elise Krieghoff, had seven shots — none on goal — and Megan Abutin had five.
In the penalty shootout, the Mustangs’ Gianna Rosati scored to put them out front, but Krieghoff missed the second to give Long Beach State a chance to pull even. After two more makes by Cal Poly, Abutin stepped up to the penalty spot with a chance to secure the victory for the Mustangs but could not convert.
Never miss a local story.
The 49ers proceeded to make their next three penalty shots to earn the win.
Alyssa Giannetti recorded four saves in regulation, and Sara Lancaster recorded two shots on goal.
In the only regular season meeting between the two teams, Cal Poly defeated Long Beach State 3-0.
This is the second year Cal Poly has lost in the semifinals after losing to Cal State Fullerton in penalty kicks last season.
In Thursday’s first match, Cal State Fullerton beat CSUN 1-0 and will play Long Beach State in Sunday’s championship game for the Big West’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
De Los Santos wins monthly Big West Conference honor
Cal Poly sophomore Justin De Los Santos was named Big West Conference Men’s Golfer of the Month for October as he placed sixth in the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley.
De Los Santos shot a 6-under 210 at the Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.
It was his fourth career top-20 finish, as he shot a 69, 70, and 71 over the three days. His first-round score of 69 is his third round in the 60s in his Cal Poly career and his 210 is a 54-hole best.
