It didn’t take long for head coach Nick Carless to win his first conference title.
He did so in his first year at the helm of the Cal Poly men’s tennis team as the Mustangs defeated UC Irvine 5-2 on Saturday to clinch a share of the Big West Conference regular-season title.
It is the third regular season title for Cal Poly (12-7, 4-0 Big West) in program history. The Mustangs also clinched the No. 1 seed in next weekend’s conference tournament in Indian Wells with the win.
UC Irvine started the match taking the doubles point, as Cal Poly’s duo of Andre Dome and Matt Fawcett was the only team to win. They defeated UC Irvine’s Sam Gould and Jacob Jung 8-2.
In singles, the Mustangs dropped just one matchup. At No. 1 singles, Dome defeated Fabian Matthews 6-0, 6-4, and Jurgen De Jager defeated Shuhei Shibahara 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5.
Fresno State 5, Cal Poly 2
The Mustangs (10-10) managed just two singles victories in a regular-season-ending loss to the Bulldogs (11-8).
Cal Poly’s Gabby Gatewood defeated Laura Pola 6-1, 6-2, and Ané McPike was winning 4-6, 2-0 before her match against Fresno State’s Tanya Murtagh was retired.
Alexa Lee kept it close at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs, but ultimately fell short in a 7-6, 7-6 sweep.
The Bulldogs swept doubles, winning by scores of 8-6, 8-3 and 8-5.
UC Davis 4, Cal Poly 0; Cal Poly 7, UC Davis 2
Cal Poly (12-27, 4-7 Big West) split its home doubleheader against UC Davis.
The Mustangs were shut out in the first game. Cal Poly’s Jordan Yates (3-9) pitched seven innings and gave up four runs on seven hits.
Celina Lafrades, Nicole Lund, Nora Sobczak each had a hit for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs then defeated the Aggies behind Chloe Wurst, who gave up two runs on seven hits in seven innings.
Mariah Cochiolo went 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Mustangs, Celina Lafrades was 2 for 3 with two RBI and Lund had an RBI.
