Cal Poly’s men’s soccer team was picked to finish second in the Big West Conference this season in the preseason coaches poll released Wednesday.
Defending conference tournament champion UC Santa Barbara was picked to win the conference, receiving six first-place votes and 48 points in the coaches’ balloting.
Cal Poly received the only other first-place vote and 40 points. Cal State Fullerton (32 points) and defending regular season champion UC Irvine (30 points) were picked for third and fourth, respectively.
Cal Poly returns seven starters from last season’s team that finished third in the Big West at 5-3-2 and was 8-7-3 overall.
Cal Poly women win big on Costa Rica trip
Playing in an international, preseason exhibition game Wednesday, the Cal Poly women’s basketball team defeated the University of Costa Rica 91-29.
Caroline Reeves scored a game-best 14 points in the 62-point rout.
Two newcomers also made contributions for the Mustangs, as redshirt freshman Ariana Elegado had 12 points and six assists while Brittany Woodard, a redshirt junior who transferred from Nevada, added 12 points.
Morro Bay golf tourney set
The Morro Bay Golf Club will hold its 51st annual tournament Sept. 10 at the Morro Bay Golf Course with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
The tournament is open to men and women and is a 2-person, best-ball event. The field is limited to the first 64 teams that sign up. Entry fee is $90 per player.
