Cal Poly senior golfer Geoff Gonzalez had a disappointing finish to the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek on Thursday, shooting a 13-over 85 to finish the third day with a three-round 247 total. He tied for 146th place.
LSU’s John Peterson followed a blistering second-round 65 with an even-par showing Thursday to earn medalist honors, edging UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay by one stroke, 211-212.
Cal Poly second in Big West Cup standings
Cal Poly finished second in the Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup Standings for the third straight year when results were announced Thursday.

The Mustangs, who won regular season team championships in women’s basketball and women’s tennis, trailed only Long Beach State, which won the Cup title for the third time in the past six years.
The Cup is presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference’s 16 sponsored sports. Total points are summed up and divided by the number of championships each team competes in.
The 49ers averaged 130.7 points. Cal Poly averaged 118.0. Defending champion UC Santa Barbara, which has won eight Cup titles dating back to 1998, had 108.0.
Atascadero's Thompson headed to La Verne to play football
Atascadero High senior Tanner Thompson will play football and baseball at the University of La Verne, Greyhounds football coach Vic Cooper said.
Thompson was an all-county first-team pick by The Tribune in football this past season after rushing for 1,433 yards and 14 touchdowns on 200 carries, and catching 18 passes for 303 yards and a TD.
Thompson was also a standout in baseball this year, hitting .414 with six doubles and five triples, all team highs.
La Verne is a Division III program near Los Angeles.
Chalk Mountain to host charity golf event
Chalk Mountain Golf Course in Atascadero will host a charity golf tournament for veteran amputees from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
The scramble format will feature one veteran amputee who plays golf paired with three other golfers.
The cost for a team is $75 and covers green fees, a cart, a goodie bag with a bottle of wine, a T-shirt and a Tri-Tip dinner. There are also games planned such as a 50-50 drawing, a miracle-putt competition and closest to the pin.

The Cal Poly women’s soccer program will host a skills camp for girls ages 9-14 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. July 18-22 at Cal Poly’s on-campus, upper sports complex.
