Cal Poly’s volleyball team ended the regular season strongly and maintained its hold on third place in the Big West Conference with its fourth consecutive victory Friday with a 25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 25-23 win at UC Riverside (2-29, 0-15).
The usual suspects played strongly for Cal Poly (22-7, 12-4). Kristina Graven led the Mustangs in both kills (19) and digs (21). Catie Smith recorded 15 kills and eight digs, Dominique Olowolafe had 12 kills while hitting a team-high .391, and Jennifer Keddy added 10 kills.
Sarah Cawrse handed out 51 assists for the Mustangs and also had nine digs.
Cal Poly finished behind Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State, who were first and second, respectively in the Big West.
The NCAA Tournament selections will be announced Nov. 28.
Cuesta 71, Marin 40
So far this season Cuesta has lived and died by the 3-pointer.
A day after shooting 1 for 6 from beyond the arc in the first half in a loss to Consumnes River at the Mendocino Tournament at Ukiah, the Cougars (3-2) went 13 of 17 from long range in the first half against Marin and went into the break with a commanding 47-22 advantage.
Malte Kramer shot a blistering 9 of 9 on 3-pointers in the first half for 27 points and finished with 34 points after sinking two more 3-pointers in the second half.
Defensively, the Cougars forced 30 turnovers en route to advancing to today’s 1 p.m. consolation final against Mendocino.
The Cal Poly Invitational was rained out at the Mustang Courts. Weather permitting, action will being today at 10 a.m. with individual competitors from Cal Poly, Santa Barbara and Santa Clara.
