The Cal Poly men’s basketball team announced the signing Thursday of Peninsula High of San Pedro shooting guard Reese Morgan to a national letter of intent.
Morgan, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound guard, will join the Mustangs for the 2011-12 season. He led Peninsula in points (19.5), rebounds (10.0), assists (3.2) and steals (1.5) per game as a junior.
Morgan shot 44.1 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from 3-point range to help lead Peninsula (19-8) to second place in the Bay League.
“Reese is an exceptional student-athlete and a perfect fit for the Cal Poly men’s basketball program,” Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero said in a news release.
Mendes wins at WEC 52
Former Cal Poly wrestling standout Chad Mendes remained unbeaten as a mixed martial artist, pounding out a unanimous decision over Javier Vazquez at WEC 52 at the Pearl at the Palms.
Mendes controlled most of the bout, taking down Vazquez in each round and beating on him with punches and elbows.
By the fight’s end, Mendes had battered and bloodied Vazquez, winning all three rounds on each judge’s scorecard for a unanimous 30-27 victory.
Mendes (9-0) improved to 4-0 in the WEC, and had his rights retained in the merger between the UFC and WEC. He is likely to make his UFC debut early in 2011.
