The Cal Poly volleyball team picked up a crucial 26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23 win over Long Beach State to stay afloat in the crowded Big West Conference title picture on Friday in Long Beach.
Each set was highly competitive, with Long Beach (16-6, 6-3) outhitting Cal Poly .285 to .223. The Mutangs did have more kills, 67-59.
Cal Poly (18-6, 8-3) trailed 23-21 in the final set and rallied with four straight points to take the match, preventing a decisive fifth set.
Kristina Graven led the Mustangs with 20 kills and added eight digs. Jennifer Keddy hit .400 and had 16 kills and two aces.
Dominique Olowolafe tallied 12 kills, Catie Smith had 11 kills and 15 digs, Sarah Cawrse had 57 assists and eight digs, and Alison Mort led the Mustangs with 31 digs.
Cal Poly 1, UC Santa Barbara 0
Forward Morgan Miller led the Mustangs (8-9-1, 3-4-1 Big West) past UC Santa Barbara (8-9-2, 3-5-0).
Miller scored her third goal of the season in the 34th minute with an assist from midfielder Julie McKee for the game’s only goal.
The Mustangs outshot the Gauchos 15-7 — seven of those coming on goal compared to UC Santa Barbara’s two.
Goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin recorded the shutout for Cal Poly.
Despite the win, Cal Poly was unable to lock down a spot in the conference tournament.
The Mustangs will host Cal State Bakersfield at 1 p.m. Sunday in their final match of the season.
