Following its 38-17 loss at Fresno State this past weekend, the Cal Poly football team rose from No. 15 to No. 14 in The Sports Network’s Football Championship Subdivision rankings Monday.
The Mustangs (3-2), who trailed 21-17 at halftime against the Bulldogs, fell from No. 14 to No. 16 in the coaches poll. Appalachian State (4-0) was No. 1 in both rankings.
Cal Poly men’s soccer team sophomore goalkeeper Brett Finkelstein was named the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Finkelstein gave up one goal in 181 minutes of work and posted his first shutout of the season during a 1-0 overtime win over UC Riverside, a game in which he made six saves for the Mustangs (4-3-1, 1-0 Big West).
Cal Poly men's golf team in first, women in fourth at home tournament
The Cal Poly men’s golf team was first, and its women’s team fourth following 36 holes of play at the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational held at par-71 Monarch Dunes.
Representing the men’s team, which has a four-person 581 total, Pace Johnson is in third individually with rounds of 72 and 71.
The nine-team field has 18 holes to play this morning.
The Mustangs women’s squad, also through 36 holes, has a total of 631. Cal State Northridge leads at 612.
Hansen named Big West golfer of the month
Los Osos’ Matt Hansen, a recent Morro Bay High grad who is now a freshman at UC Davis, was named the Big West Conference Men’s Golfer of the Month this past week.
He had a top-10 finish in his first tournament for the Aggies and boasted a 72.2 average for September.
