The Cal Poly women’s tennis team will send the doubles tandem of junior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee to the ITA All-American Tournament on Saturday in Los Angeles where they will meet SMU’s Shahzoda Hatarnova and Edyta Cieplucha.
“We’re pleased to have Amy and Alexa selected to participate in the ITA event, which consists of the nation’s top singles players and doubles teams,” Mustangs coach Hugh Bream said in a news release.
Lee and then-partner Steffi Wong were ranked as high as No. 59 last season after compiling a 17-5 record. Markhoff, who redshirted last season, went 20-4 as a sophomore with then-partner Suzie Matzenauer.
Banuelos wins WEC bout
Never miss a local story.
Arroyo Grande resident and former Cal Poly wrestler Antonio Banuelos won a unanimous decision Thursday over Chad George in a mixed martial arts bout at WEC 51 in Broomfield, Colo.
Banuelos, who trains with San Luis Obispo resident and UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell, won 29-28 on two of the judge’s cards and 30-27 on the third. He was thought to be one of the top contenders for the WEC Bantamweight title before a loss to Scott Jorgensen in April.
With the win, Banuelos (18-6) moves himself back up the chain toward his first world title opportunity.
