The Cal Poly women’s soccer team got off to a rough start with a 7-0 loss at No. 3 UCLA in Sunday’s season opener for both teams. Sydney Leroux scored four goals on seven shots for the Bruins, who put six shots past Mustangs goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin in the first half. Gauvin had four saves, as did Johanna Pfeiffer, who replaced Gauvin in goal to start the second half.
Junior Tiffany Gummow was the only Cal Poly player to record a shot. One of her two shots was on goal.
UCLA was up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes before Leroux scored her first goal at the 20-minute mark. Leroux had a hat trick before halftime and added her fourth goal when she scored past Pfeiffer with six minutes left in the match.
UCLA had three corner kicks to Cal Poly’s one, while the Mustangs were whistled for 10 fouls compared to seven for the Bruins.
Never miss a local story.
The Mustangs travel to Honolulu for a Friday match with Hawaii next and play their first home game on Sept. 3 against San Jose State.
