The No. 2-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team beat Cal Poly 2-0 in the Nike Classic opener Friday evening.
It was only the second time in Virginia’s past 18 non-ACC regular season games in which they were limited to no more than two goals.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring in the 31st minute on a goal by Courtney Petersen, which was assisted by Veronica Latsko. Virgina struck again in the 40th minute, when Petersen found Emily Sonnett for a header to make the score 2-0.
Cal Poly’s goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti had 13 saves to tie for the third-most in a single game in school history. After Friday’s performance, Giannetti is one save short of the all-time school record held by Kristina Grigaitis (307).
The Mustangs (0-1-2) will face Richmond at 9 a.m. Sunday.
