The Cal Poly baseball team beat Long Beach State 6-1 at Baggett Stadium on Friday night.
The Mustangs (18-20, 6-4 Big West), who have won eight of their past 10 games, enjoyed a stellar outing by Casey Bloomquist (4-2), who pitched eight innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, striking out eight.
Luke Rasmussen doubled off Bloomquist in the first inning to score Zack Rivera for the 49ers’ only run.
Cal Poly answered in the bottom of the inning, with Peter Van Gansen scoring on an error.
The Mustangs scored three runs in the fourth, on a Tommy Pluschkell RBI single, a Van Gansen RBI walk, and then Pluschkell scored on a passed ball.
Cal Poly scored a run in the fifth, on a Brett Barbier sacrifice fly that scored Zack Zehner and another in the sixth, when Mark Mathias singled in John Schuknecht.
Danny Zandona earned the save for Cal Poly, striking out two.
L.A. Pierce 6, Cuesta 5, 10 innings
Brendan Jenkins went seven innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and had four strikeouts in the Cougars’ final regular season game.
Cuesta (20-16, 15-9 Western State Conference) took the lead 3-2 in the third
inning, when R.J. Hassey had an RBI single, Garrett Giovanelli had an RBI triple and T.K. McWhertor had an RBI single. Cuesta got two more runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Josh Falco and a McWhertor RBI groundout.
Leading 5-4 entering the ninth inning, Cuesta then gave up the tying run on a wild pitch on an intentional walk. In the tenth, L.A. Pierce had a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt and won the game on an RBI single. Giovanelli finished the game 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, a run and an RBI.
Cuesta’s playoff fate will be determined Sunday.
UC Irvine 4, Cal Poly 1
After winning the Big West Tournament last year, the Mustangs were ousted in the semifinals at Indian Wells.
Cal Poly (15-10) was able to tie the match after dropping the doubles point as Axel Damiens won 6-1, 6-1 in singles.
The Mustangs’ Naveen Beasley pushed Shuhei Shibahara to three sets before losing 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Long Beach State 4, Cal Poly 0
The Mustangs’ (5-16) season came to an end as they were swept in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament in Indian Wells.
Emily Gibbens, Molly Reed, and Sayaka Tsugai were swept in singles.
