The Cal Poly women’s golf team finished fifth with a three-day total of 909, two strokes behind third-place UC Riverside and BYU, at the Gold Rush Invitational in Long Beach on Tuesday.
Cal Poly’s Sophie Bergland and Jamie Harada shot identical scores of 223 on the par-72 course to tie for fifth in the individual standings. Bergland’s best round was a 72 on the first day while Harada shot a 73 on the final day.
BYU’s Lea Garner was the individual medalist finishing at 216, and Long Beach State won the team title.
Cuesta baseball wins big on the road
The Cuesta College baseball team held College of the Sequoias scoreless after the second inning to win its first game of the year, 9-1, in Visalia.
San Luis Obispo High graduate Garrett Giovannelli had two RBI while fellow ex-Tiger RJ Hassey went 3 for 5 with an RBI as well for the Cougars (1-6), who took the lead in the top of the fourth and scored seven unanswered runs.
Arroyo Grande graduate Kyle Raubinger went 3 for 6 with an RBI in the highest-scoring game of the season for the Cougars, who start league play next week after back-to-back games against Saddleback.
