Riggleman formally introduced as Nats manager

The Washington Nationals made it official on Thursday, removing the interim tag and handing Jim Riggleman the managerial job on a full-time basis.

Riggleman, who turned 57 on Monday, will attempt to turn around a club that has racked up 100-plus losses in each of the last two seasons.

"He's got a discipline and a toughness to his personality," said Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo. "He's a quiet kind of a leader."

He was named interim manager of the Nationals on July 13, replacing the dismissed Manny Acta. Washington went 33-42 after Riggleman took over and finished the 2009 campaign with a 59-103 record, the worst in baseball.

"It's a great interesting time, but the bottom line is we have to do better," said Riggleman. "Hopefully we'll play more like we did those last couple of months rather what we did the first couple."

Riggleman and Bobby Valentine were reportedly the final two candidates for the position.

This is Riggleman's fourth managerial stint, also serving as skipper of the Padres (1992-94), Cubs (1995-99) and Mariners (2008). He owns a career mark of 585-694 in his 10 years as a bench boss.
