A four-run sixth inning put the Cal Poly softball team in the driver’s seat, and then the Mustangs withstood a three-run rally in the seventh inning in a 4-3 win over Stanford at the Stanford Nike Invitational on Sunday.
Sierra Hyland (4-2) pitched a complete game, striking out six. She allowed just one hit through the first six innings before allowing three runs on three hits and three walks in the seventh.
Hyland was staked to a 4-0 lead when the Mustangs (5-5) scored on a wild pitch, added two more runs on a single by Emily Ceccacci and picked up another run on a throwing error in the sixth inning.
Stephanie Heyward had two hits and scored a run, Ceccacci was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run, and Amanda Sandoval and Chelsea Convissar each had a hit and a run for Cal Poly.
Haley Snyder (5-4) allowed four runs — three earned — in three innings of relief a and took the loss for Stanford (7-4).
Baylor 6, Cal Poly 0
The Mustangs managed just seven hits and were swept on the road to start the season.
Justin Calomeni (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs — four earned — in three innings. He gave up six hits while walking two and striking out three.
Jordan Ellis and Peter Van Gansen each had two hits for Cal Poly (0-3). One of Van Gansen’s hits was a double, the Mustangs’ only extra-base hit.
The Mustangs are 0-3 for the first time since 2011, when they started 0-6.
West Tunnell hit two doubles and drove in three runs for Baylor (3-0).
Cal Poly travels to Fresno State for a nonconference game Tuesday.
Cal Poly 33, Grand Canyon 3
The Mustangs won just their third dual of the year.
Nick Fiegener won at 184 pounds, improving his record to 22-12. He defeated Austin Trujillo, 13-3.
Dominic Kastl won at 174 pounds and is 14-5.
Colton Schilling improved to 21-8, winning at 141 pounds for Cal Poly (3-14).
Cal Poly 4, San Francisco 3
The Mustangs rallied twice to pick up the win and improve to 4-0 at home.
Axel Damiens clinched the win at No. 6 singles with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over Johan Samuelsson.
Naveen Beasley, Garrett Auproux and Corey Pang each picked up singles wins for the Mustangs (5-3).
San Jose State 4, Cal Poly 1
Emily Gibbens picked up the only victory for the Mustangs at No. 2 singles in a home loss.
Gibbens defeated Marie Klocker 6-2, 6-1.
Cal Poly (1-5) opens Big West Conference play Saturday at Long Beach State.
