The Cal Poly football team’s 30-28 loss to Idaho State may yet prove to cost it dearly in the FCS playoff race, but in the meantime, the immediate penalty is that the Mustangs fell out of the rankings in two polls released Monday.
Cal Poly (6-4, 5-2 Big Sky Conference) received votes in both The Sports Network media poll and the FCS Coaches Poll, but not enough to crack the top 25. The Mustangs were ranked No. 21 in the media poll and No. 23 in the coaches poll last week.
Cal Poly, which has lost two Big Sky games by a total of five points, will host rival UC Davis on Saturday.
Cal Poly trails four teams in the race for the Big Sky title, and is tied in the loss column with Montana (4-2). Eastern Washington is 6-1 in the conference, while Idaho State, Montana State and Northern Arizona are all 5-1.
