Two Fresno State tennis products captured both of the men’s and women’s open singles titles at the 22nd annual Avila Bay Classic at the Avila Bay Athletic Club on Monday before coming together to win a third title in doubles.
South African native and former Bulldog Rikus de Villiers defeated Kyle Lewis of Santa Barbara 6-4, 6-2 in the men’s title, and Bulldog Bianca Modoc beat Cal Poly’s Ireen Kuipers in a three-hour 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 match set for the women’s title before de Villiers and Modoc combined to win the mixed open doubles finals.
The annual tournament attracted more than 225 players from all over the world, including 125 from San Luis Obispo County. The total prize money was $2,500.
Local singles winners were: Rudy Garcia of Avila Beach won the men’s 50-and-over singles title on his 58th birthday, Evan Redman of Morro Bay won the men’s B title and Gianni Rastado of Nipomo won the men’s C title.

Local doubles winners were: Blake Rowan and Rodney Cegelski of San Luis Obispo won the men’s A title, Dana Evangelista and Linda Derringer of Arroyo Grande won the mixed A title and Evan and Jennifer Redman of Morro Bay won the mixed B title.
