San Luis Obispo boys golfer Adam Zakaria shot a 78 at the CIF-Southern Section Individual Final Championship at Victoria Country Club in Riverside on Monday and did not make the cut for next week’s Southern California Championships.
The tournament medalist was Camarillo’s Johnny Ruiz, who fired a 66. San Marcos’ Thayer White was the final regional qualifier after carding a 75.
Former Templeton High player a coach on Div. II national champion
Lindsay Campana, a former Templeton High standout, helped Valdosta State win a Division II national championship in softball as a member of the staff.
Campana, who was The Tribune County Softball Player of the Year in 2005, has been the pitching coach for the Blazers the past two years.
Valdosta State beat UC San Diego 4-1 in the title game Saturday.
Cal Poly's Armendariz named Big West player of the week
Cal Poly sophomore outfielder David Armendariz has been named the Big West Conference Field Player of the Week after going 6 for 10 with seven RBI and four stolen bases in four baseball games last week.
The 6-foot-1 graduate of Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks also walked three times, laid down two sacrifice bunts and hit a sacrifice fly. He hit .600 and produced a .900 slugging percentage and a .643 on-base percentage.
For the season, Armendariz, who is the fifth Mustangs (33-20, 13-8 Big West) player honored by the conference, is hitting .281 with nine doubles, a triple, three home runs and 26 RBI. He leads the Mustangs with 12 stolen bases.
