The MLB Urban Academy Barons scored early and often against the San Luis Obispo Blues on Tuesday night, winning a summer collegiate baseball game 10-2 in Compton.
The Barons (6-14, 6-14 California Collegiate League) scored three runs in the first inning off three hits and then poured on two runs in the second and third innings combined to take a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Blues (16-6, 13-6 CCL) had their first answer of the night. Chad Christensen knocked a two-out RBI double to left-center to bring home the first run of the game for San Luis Obispo.
But the Barons fired back with one run in the fourth, one run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to take a 10-1 lead.
Never miss a local story.
The Blues’ only other run of the night came in the top of the ninth inning, when catcher Thomas Bernal, a former Paso Robles High star now at Kentucky, hit an RBI single to make it 10-2.
The Blues combined for six hits on the night, with Christensen being the only player to rack up more than one; he went 2 for 4 with a RBI.
Former Mission Prep standout Alex Detz, now at Cuesta College, and Bernal both went 1 for 4, while Max Homick and Zac Elgie went 1 for 3.
Blues starter Josh Frye went three innings and gave up five runs off six hits. Joshua Dexheimer then came on to pitch 2 1⁄3 innings and give up five runs, before Harmen Sidhu and Vince Wheeland pitched 2 2⁄3 innings of scoreless relief.
