I am writing with concern regarding the recent discontinuation of the Cal Poly off-campus escort van service.
While I recognize that you are not responsible for its removal, I know it has caused unrest among the Cal Poly student body, and I feel the need to share my thoughts with the San Luis Obispo community.
I was recently involved in an armed assault in my neighborhood within a 1-mile radius of the Cal Poly campus. I was walking home with two friends (a male and a female) when we were attacked by three armed robbers in ski masks who held us at gunpoint, dragged us to the ground and stole our belongings.
This terrifying event, and other similar incidents in SLO, have instilled within me a sense of anxiety.
Never miss a local story.
The freedom of walking home after dark has been taken away.
As a result, I avoid late nights in the library.
I believe that Cal Poly should offer safe transportation for students from nightfall until 2 a.m. It is incongruous to hold late hours at the library but refuse to offer safe transportation past 10 p.m.
Money from our student fees could be allocated for an off-campus shuttle service that begins running once the bus stops at 10 p.m.
