I applaud San Luis Obispo’s efforts to eliminate Styrofoam food containers, cups, etc. I’d like to see it taken to the next level and ask the county and state to do the same. Lead the way, just as we did with plastic bags. There are alternatives to Styrofoam and almost all single-use plastics, in almost every application.
When we order takeout, we request compostable containers.
Most restaurants are happy to comply when asked. Compostable clamshell containers with a layer of wax paper are a great alternative.
Many single-use plastics are recyclable, but plastic never goes away and never fully breaks down. Check out the Plastic Pollution Coalition for more information.
