What a pleasant surprise when I went to get The Tribune from my driveway this morning! I always bring down a couple of plastic bags with me, so I can pick up trash left in our street by the folks who come for the view. Instead, I found a couple of guys cleaning up the cul-de-sac and putting the refuse in their truck.
I was so struck by this act of kindness that I introduced myself. But it was no random act. Brian Johnson and his crew go around the area cleaning up wherever it’s needed. They live here, and they don’t like what they see. Johnson owns Coastal Kings Hauling, and this is how he spends time when he’s not working. He has plans to contact the chamber of commerce to seek funding for a city-wide effort, something akin to the beach-cleaning program. It is great to see someone the same age as those who leave their trash (and some unmentionables) actually taking responsibility for his peers. Kudos to this Good Sam! If The New York Times finds San Luis Obispo an attractive place to visit, then we’d all better make it so.
