‘At a time when scientists tell us we need to reduce carbon pollution to prevent catastrophic climate change, it is absurd to provide massive taxpayer subsidies that pad fossil-fuel companies’ already enormous profits.” — Sen. Bernie Sanders
The recent announcement by Sanders of his intention to run for president was a shot across the bow on the part of an angry citizenry fed up with America’s steady drift toward corporatized plutocracy.
Increasingly, our democracy is up for grabs to the highest bidder, and giant fossil-fuel corporations are finding that buying politicians provides a good return on investment. Rep. Keith Ellison and Sen. Sanders are troubled by this state of affairs and recently introduced legislation called the End Polluter Welfare Act, which would end tax breaks to fossil-fuel industries. As of July 2014, Oil Change International estimates U.S. fossil fuel subsidies at “$37.5 billion annually, including $21 billion in production and exploration subsidies.”
Now consider this: Profits for oil, gas and coal companies operating in the U.S. and Canada were $331 billion in 2013.
Our task as responsible citizens is to make polluters pay for despoiling our planetary commons. Support Bernie Sanders, fossil-fuel divestment, a carbon tax and investment in clean energy.
