In early May, we attended a terrific Sunday performance of Celtic music at the Performing Arts Center on the Cal Poly campus. At the end of April, the world-famous Paul Taylor Dance Company visited here for a wonderful evening of modern dance (which we sponsored). Back in November, we were fortunate to see and hear the Grammy-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra at the PAC.
One unfortunate characteristic these three events had in common was an excessive number of empty seats. And this has been true of too many other performances this season. According to the director of Cal Poly Arts, attendance at a number of events has been less than 50 percent of the roughly 1,280-seat capacity.
This lack of support is embarrassing to performers and to our community. The PAC has brought a much-needed infusion of culture to the Central Coast since its opening nearly 20 years ago.
But unless patronage increases considerably, the viability of the entire enterprise will be threatened. Please step up to the plate by purchasing tickets and contributing in other ways to this fantastic facility and its programs.
Never miss a local story.
There is no good substitute for experiencing live, world-class performances!
