My heart was heavy as I read the article about San Luis Obispo police Chief Steve Gesell.
Not knowing all the facts, I am not able to comment, but I do have a heart-wrenching problem here, and that is: “Where is the transparency?”
I know there are rules that must be followed by all employers when there is an employee issue, but when someone paid by our tax dollars is under scrutiny, it does seem the taxpayers should be given more than a tidbit of knowledge — just enough to make the person suspect and tarnish his/her name — but not enough to allow us to consider exactly what is going on.
Kudos to the City Council members who spoke some positive words about Chief Gesell’s service, so at least there is “another side of the story” in some sense of the word. But I do think that what we have here is another example of the media reporting just enough to make headlines — and perhaps not enough to give a fair shake — and of course none of the council or Chief Gesell can comment due to the nature of the situation, but I think something is wrong with this picture.
