As a supporter of the plan to open the Las Pilitas Quarry in Santa Margarita, I urge approval of this project for the greater good of San Luis Obispo County. This proposal will provide a needed source of aggregate materials, create local jobs and most importantly, provide a boost to the local economy.
A report by the State Geologist projects that aggregate reserves are projected to run out by 2026 without expanding existing mines and permitting new ones to meet the growing aggregate needs for infrastructure projects, road repairs and commercial and residential construction.
As our economy bounces back, construction projects and infrastructure investments will only grow, but the materials needed for these projects will increasingly come from areas outside the county.
With the Las Pilitas Quarry, we have an opportunity to embrace the “Go Local” attitude. Supporting local businesses, local jobs and the added benefit of dollars that are recirculated right here at home, instead of sending those dollars to enterprises that will not reinvest a dime in San Luis Obispo County.
We need the aggregate. We need to embrace local jobs and businesses. We need the added economic benefit. We need the Las Pilitas Quarry.
