I am responding to the censorship of Brandon Pettenger by the Lucia Mar school district for presenting alternate views of the origins of life in his science classroom. I studied geology at the master’s level and worked for Sohio Petroleum Company in research.
There is much debate in scientific circles about the precepts of the origin of life on Earth. Some in the science community say life originated in other galaxies and was seeded here by alien sources. Others claim that chains of sophisticated but random biochemical processes through billions of years are responsible for the very complex life forms and systems we see on Earth. And there are a growing number of scientists who are doubting some aspects of evolutionary models, claiming there is no way mathematically or scientifically that the complexity of life systems we see can come from the disconnected and unordered process in evolutionary models. They are choosing intelligent design as the most explainable source of complex life.
All are scientists. All are giving good research for their conclusions. And all aspects of the debate should be shared in our high school classrooms as viable options for the source of life.
