I am writing in response to the man who wrote the letter degrading our fire departments, (“Fire help not needed,” April 22).
I am the mother of a local fire captain and, on a daily basis, I worry about the safety of firefighters.
Do you think the fire fee of $150 helps the fireman who was so badly burned when the roof fell in while he was on it? Do you think your dollars will make a child understand that dad won’t be home, or help a wife who will never feel his arms around her again, or the mother who never got a chance to say goodbye to her son or daughter? This money will go to make your home or someone else’s home safer.
Our firefighters are on duty 24/7. Yes, they have a gym — so they are in good enough shape to carry you from a burning building.
Sure, they rest sometimes; how about you? Does someone wake you up during the night to hop to it to go on a call, maybe to save your house or your life from fire?
You spend a day in their shoes, then write a letter. I think you may change your attitude. I, for one, would not want their job.
