If you were to monitor the activities of local government, you just might be surprised. It doesn’t always operate in ways that benefit you. As new bureaucracies are established, taxes increased, debt escalates, prices skyrocket and hidden agendas exist, there can be unforeseen consequences.
Consider the current water issue: Do you really want control of all your water to be in the hands of the government? We’ve heard the saying, “absolute power corrupts absolutely”; hence, putting control of our water in government hands would be disastrous.
No institution or person should have absolute power over the substance that guarantees humanity’s survival.
Which leads us to but one of the reasons that San Luis Obispo County residents are speaking out. It is hoped that more and more citizens will participate in this process — a process that will result in better, more responsible government.
Once we believed that wisdom, integrity and fiscal responsibility were bywords of our governing bodies.
But that will not happen without accountability.
