In his letter (Jan. 31), Bob Alderman says that unlike zero-sum (win-lose), business is a win-win, and nobody loses. I know that is Economics 101, but it doesn’t hold up to history. Modern humans began to evolve about 500,000 years ago, but at that time there was already a magnificent abundance of natural wealth on planet Earth. That wealth was distributed to all living things, and there was no such thing as owning wealth.
Modern humans subsequently created ways to change natural wealth into unnatural wealth. That is called “doing business,” and today, by “doing business,” all calculated natural and unnatural wealth on the planet has been redistributed so that about 10 percent of the human population owns 90 percent of the wealth.
No one expects proportional wealth distribution, but the 10 percent-90 percent numbers are more like zero-sum than win-win.
